Irish Whiskey Reviews

A Bottle of Blackbush whiskey being given the royal treatment.

Black bush began as an alternative to Bushmills white label or White Bush.  It was first known as Bushmills Liqueur whiskey, designed to be heavy in flavor and character, but it's dark label, especially in contrast to Bushmills Irish whiskey's white label, lent itself to be nick named "Blackbush".  The name stuck.

Blackbush was able to tout slight moderate success up until the mid 1960's when a shortage of older whiskeys meant that Blackbush became scarce.  This scarcity in the market created interest in both occasional drinkers of the whiskey, as well as newcomers, who just heard the call for this hard to find spirit.

Bushmills, with it's fine reputation in the north of Ireland, as well as around the world, is touted as one of the best Irish whiskeys readily available, and Black bush pushes that reputation even further.  With almost 3/4 of the whiskey being a malt whiskey aged at least 8 years and the grain close behind, Blackbush is a fine, smooth and easy drinking Irish whiskey.

Nose: A fine balance of malt that is well defined, a gentile sherry and a softness brought on by a high quality of grain whiskey, and wrapped up in a subtitle peat smoke typical of the Bushmills label.

Taste: A full bodied malty whiskey with sherry and peat overtones.  this along with an ever developing spice.

Finish: The spice comes through in the finish of this whiskey only to be subdues with a sweetness and lovely sherry and bourbon cask flavor battle it out in the most refined of manner.  A fine whiskey, and a great buy for the modest price.
