Irish Whiskey Reviews

Bunratty Export potcheen, 90 proof (45%ABV)

An original treasure, this clear, smooth Irish spirit had been banned in Ireland since 1661. Known as "Potcheen" or "Poitin", Poteen was distilled for centuries for its smooth, extra strong taste. Also known as moonshine or mountain dew, it is a fiery tipple made from malt and barley fermented with yeast and distilled. It has a delightful changing aftertaste that sweetens as it develops. Bunratty Poteen, the first to be legally produced and bottled in Ireland, is now available for all the world to savor.

Bunratty Winery, Co. Claire. Bunratty poteen is sold here.

Bunratty Winery is situated in the shadow of the famous l5th century Bunratty Castle in the historical county of Clare, which is the home of the most mystical drinks in Ireland.

Nose: Much like it's 80 proof counterpart, this slightly stronger poteen has a A sweet nose.  There is strong honey and berrys with rich roasted nut aroma.

Taste: The astringency hits your palate first with this  45%ABV poteen, giving it an authentic taste of the old Irish heather, this is quickly joined by melon and honey balanced with earth.  The Poteen warms as you allow yourself to succumb to this unique spirit.

Finish: The finish of this poteen is dry and pleasing.  You are left with a toasted nut and sweet honey flavor.  The 90 proof poteen is not dramatically different from the 80 proof, both poteens are fine examples of what the "mountain dew" actually tastes like.
