Kilbeggan Irish whiskey was established in 1757 in Kilbeggan, Ireland. Since that time this Irish whiskey has undergone a number of changes. Once Kilbeggan sat near the top of what Irish Whiskey was in the world, fighting Locke's for top dog status in the Irish whiskey market, back when John Jameson & Son's used to only sell their whiskey in barrels to be renamed or relabeled and sold as something else. Today however, Kilbeggan stands as a minority whiskey, struggling to survive in a global whiskey market.
Kilbeggan is distilled by Cooley distillery, distillers of Locke's, Michael Collins, and Tyrconnell to name a few. Cooley stands as a small fish in a very big pond. Irish Distillers Group has made attempts to buy the distillery to shut it down, but monopoly regulations have prevented this from happening, but Cooley must still compete in a global market to survive.
Today, Kilbeggan stands as a fine blended
Irish whiskey sold at a moderate price, it's not the pure pot still Irish
whiskey it once was, nor is it a top dog, but the name and the whiskey
stand for what Irish whiskey should be. If Irish whiskey is not to
be dominated by Jameson and Bushmills alone, Kilbeggan and Cooley
distillery are here keeping them honest and adding flavor and histoy to
the landscape of Irish whiskey. |

Nose:A Grassy malt and a hint of oloroso sherry have a strong impact on the grain in this blended Irish whiskey.
Taste: There is a spirited malt that is almost honey sweet which opens the door for the grain to add a solid strong middle to this Irish whiskey.
Finish: The finish is very dry with oak and a dry cocoa bitterness that plays well with the bitter and sweet taste. The finish, although not overly complex, stays with you in a pleasant and inviting way.
