Poteen was produced in Ireland according to
legend, from the time when the first potato was harvested. The term 'Irish
moonshine whiskey' commenced from around 1660. A levy was then introduced
on the legal distillation of spirits carried out privately and unless the
operator was licensed by the State, it would be deemed an illegal act and
therefore a criminal offence. Award-winning Knockeen Hills Poteen, produced in County Waterford, is either a quadruple or a triple-distilled grain spirit with a strong, smooth delicate flavor. Drunk neat, in moderation, or with mixers, the pleasant aftertaste lingers on. Butler's Irish Book published in 1660 claimed that 'it enlighteneth ye heart, casts off melancholy, keeps back old age and breaketh ye wind'. Irish folklore maintains those properties still exist today!
Knockeen Hills Farmers strength Irish poteen has won the international wine & spirits competition by taking the silver in 2002, and the gold in 2003. The 2003 win was the only gold win for Ireland in the spirits category.

Nose: A remarkable nose on this poteen, dotted with both banana and pear scents, intermixed with the grain characteristics.
Taste: Based on the distinct nose of this poteen, there is a clear banana and pear flavor to this Irish spirit. This poteen is extremely smooth and fruity.
Finish: This sophisticated spirit is a bit smoother and more refined than it's illegal parent spirit. This poteen will smoothly finish with a slightly dry end. Although you may be elevating yourself from the people of Ireland by removing yourself from the mountain hideaways where poteen was made, you need not check to see if you go blind when you sample this poteen.
