Irish Whiskey Reviews

A Bottle of Old Dublin Irish Whiskey

This Whiskey, which, according to its label, was produced by the Old Dublin Distillery Co., is actually a Value for Money Whiskey from Irish Distillers Group who launched it in 1995 to fight Cooley's predominance in the Supermarket Shelves.  Old Dublin Irish Whiskey is widely available in the U.K. retail market.

The blend contains Malt Whiskeys from both Midleton and Bushmills, aged to 6 years, and some younger Grain Whiskeys.  This Irish whiskey was meant to battle on the bottom shelf market, and it shows, the nose and finish are pleasant, but the taste is unbalanced and rougeish.  It's very creation was supposed to be a "VFM" or Value for Money whiskey, but as Peter Mulryan puts it, "Whiskeys like Old Dublin don't really offer the customer Value for Money. Duty on 7-Year-old Pot Still Whiskey, matured in first-fill Bourbon Casks, is the same as the duty on three-Year-old grain Whiskey matured in an old boot."

Nose: This Irish Whiskey is sweet, crisp & very clean.  The pot still come thru with a fine fruity sweetness but is balanced by an unwilting grain.  A wonderful combination that is joined by a pleasing malt.

Taste: Grain, grain and grain, that is what you will think as you taste this Irish whiskey.  wait for it, and...there is a hint of the malt and barley, but even with their arrival they must go against the grain.  The taste of this whiskey is a bit unbalanced.

Finish: The finish of this whiskey is, well, grainy, but blended with malt and cocoa.  The finish is almost as impressive as the nose.  Ah, but for the taste.
