Irish Whiskey Reviews

One of Ireland's softest whiskeys.  Made with grain and single malt whiskeys from Midleton and Bushmills, Paddy whiskey has the highest proportion of grain whiskey, followed by pot still and then pure malt.  However, if you combine the pure malt and pot still, you have more than 50% of the blend.

There is a great story about good old Paddy Whiskey.  Paddy whiskey was once known as Cork Distilleries Company Old Irish Whiskey, although a descriptive name, not one that lends it's self to be called out in a loud bar room.  Well, Cork Distilleries had a salesman by the name of Paddy Flaherty; Paddy used to roll into town on his bicycle, and it was common knowledge that if you were near Paddy when he would order his glass, being a gentleman as he was, Paddy would stand the Irish countrymen a round as well.  this fact alone was encouragement enough to make any landlord keep a health supply of Cork Distilleries Company Old Irish Whiskey on hand.

The benefit that Paddy Flaherty brought was so great, that publicans would ring or write the distillery asking for "Paddy Flaherty's whiskey".  From those requests, Cork distillery realized that Paddy Flaherty had branded the whiskey forever.  They began by putting the signature of Paddy Flaherty at the bottom of the label, showing that indeed this was the whiskey that Paddy bought, but over time, the name Paddy moved from the bottom of the label to the foreground, and eventually took the name over entirely, hence, Paddy Old Irish Whiskey was born.

Paddy Irish whiskey is not at all the whiskey of Paddy Flaherty's day, it has been re-engineered to be a very simple and un-complex whiskey.  It is a very light and unobtrusive whiskey, if you want big flavor and strong character, Paddy may not be your Irish Whiskey of choice, but if you are looking for a relaxed whiskey that won't take mush out of you, then sip a glass of old Paddy Flaherty's whiskey.

Nose: The nose of Paddy Irish Whiskey is a very grainy one, containing an abnormal astringent flavor for an Irish blended whiskey.  There is a bit of the sherry wood and fruit flavor that creeps through the pot still characteristic bringing with a hint of apple and honey.

Taste: Grain, grain and a little pot still to boot, the taste is remarkable un-complex.  There is little offense taken here, but your not to read into this whiskey too much, just take it a it's face value.

Finish: The finish of this whiskey allows for the pot still to escape the taster almost right away, leaving behind only the grain.  This is sweet to start, but it dissipates to a dry and bitter finish.
