Irish Whiskey Reviews

Show of Powers Whiskey

Power's Irish Whiskey, one hard to find outside Ireland, is now widely available.  Distilled at the Midleton Distillery, it is one of many whiskeys made by Irish Distillers.  During the 1990's, IGD put most of it's advertising dollars towards Jameson and Bushmills, but the Irish, and those in the know, still put their lips to a glass of Power's, this loyalty prompted IDG to give the people what they want.

Power's Irish Whiskey is a fine bottle for the price.  The Pot Still portion of Power's Whiskey is 60/40 ratio of unmalted to malted barley, this is the highest unmalted to malted ratio of whiskey produced by Midleton.  This high ratioed pot still makes up 70% of the whiskey that is put into a bottle of Powers Whiskey.

Power's Irish Whiskey goes by the names Power's, Gold Label or even "Three Swallow" in reference to the 3 birds on the label of the neck of the bottle.  It has been said that the 3 birds were put on the bottle after the three swallow nick name was given to Power's because you should sip Power's and drink it in three swallows.  This will allow you to enjoy this fine Irish Whiskey to it's fullest.

In 1988, Pernod-Ricard acquired Irish Distillers and made a decision to place their marketing resources behind 2 of Irish distilleries brands, Bushmills and Jameson.  this decision resulted in Jameson accounting for almost 75% of all Irish Whiskey sold world wide.  The fact that there is strong marketing behind Jameson Irish Whiskey should not discount the fact that it's recipe has been carefully tweaked and re-designed over the years to appeal to the largest cross section of people possible.  It's smooth pot still and grain content is at about 50/50, this along with the fresh ex-bourbon casks helps to dampen the pot still higher notes.  To finish this smooth recipe off is the use of 10% sherry casks as well.

Nose: One of the best noses of all Irish Whiskey in its price range.  The Pot still, which is 70% of this whiskey, comes forth first which catches you nose quickly, bu is pushed aside by the grain.  The complete nose of Power's Irish Whiskey is sweet, almost like honey, with pepper and a spice dirived from the oak giving a vanilla scent to the entire effect.

Taste: The 70% pot still flavor is the backbone of this whiskey, upon which spice, honey are built around.  This well balanced flavor almost hovers over the tongue as it dances across your taste buds.

Finish: A long spice is interjected with both sweet and sour, weaving it's way through the finish of this fine Irish Whiskey.
